I come here to write this review, of course, “very late”….and so, perhaps many will not read what I have to say about this book.
Being an avid reader, with interests all over the “map” so to speak, I have read God-Knows-How-Many stories in my 62+ years. Some deeply moving, others barely creating or leaving the slightest ripple in my conscious brain. Some, seemingly, with the power to change the way I see things or think about things…sometimes subtly, and in others there are major thought differences after finishing the book. This book has affected me deeply.
The last book to touch me this way was some months back when I read “The Piano Shop on the Left Bank” by Thad Carhart The Piano Shop on the Left Bank: Discovering a Forgotten Passion in a Paris Atelier which I heartily recommend to you.
With “Water for Elephants” Sara Gruen creates the long-forgotten days of the Train Circus, and all that life entailed in those days…from the impossible “set-ups”, “knock-downs”, and in many cases “hasty retreats” from any particular chosen town before the authorities arrived upon the scene.
“Hard Luck Days” certainly would be a fitting genre to place this awesome story into. And, of course, with the depression, etc., they truly were hard luck days, for everyone involved with the exception of perhaps Uncle Al with his penchant for stealing, skimming, using and abusing everyone on the show. We also come to know August and his sickness that continually creates misery and unhappiness both for him, and also for those closest to him. There is Marlena, August’s wife and performing partner with her performing horses, and later her act with Rosie the Elephant (a charming, and all-knowing wonderful beast if ever there was one). There are dozens and dozens of other characters, distributed throughout all levels of the show, from performers right on down to the dung-shovelers and the guys who do nothing but put up and take down the tents for the big top, day in and day out endless

I just finished reading Catcher in the Rye and I did not care for it at all. Wanted to read it because of the publicity, but maybe because I am a grandmother, I just didn’t like it. I just finished Dream Catcher by J. D. Salinger’s daughter, a book I greatly enjoyed and think his daughter is a remarkable individual. However, the book seemed extremely juvenile to me. Most of the content was given to sex and I can see where young boys and perhaps girls would enjoy it. Not something I would have ever cared for but it had a lot of unnecessary profanity. It speaks to me of a young man who was mentally ill, I am sure that a label could be put on it today. I am not so sure it was not actually describing Salinger himself. After reading his daughter’s book, I think Salinger definitely had mental illness, what I would call crazy. His family had to endure awful things because of him. He chose to be a recluse, and did not live in the real world, wanted to live in isolation.

My wife and I bought the Hoover Tempo in July (2010). In spite of some negative comments, it has been the best sweeper we ever bought. It is not too heavy and cleans both rugs and bare floors superbly. How they can sell it at such a low price is hard for me to understand, but I like it.

I just have to share this! I loved this pedometer and was using it every day and found that it did help me to increase my steps per day. Then I left it in the pocket of my jeans and washed it!! It fell out before I loaded the clothes in the dryer. Fortunately, I have an eyeglass screwdriver, which you WILL need to change the battery. I took out the battery, unscrewed the three other tiny screws, and took the whole thing apart. I put it on the top of a bookcase to dry, with the four tiny screws in the lid from a vitamin bottle. Then, because I didn’t really BELIEVE that it was savable, I left it there for more than a month. Then, about to toss it in the trash, I decided to put it back together, which was easy, since it is so well designed. I haven’t set all the functions yet, because I have forgotten how, but it is counting steps justs fine, with the same battery! I love this thing and plan to check my pockets before washing every time. . .

As I am disabled with Cerebral palsy and can not use my hands I can’t hold a book. The kindle makes it very easy for me to read a book. It has given me a freedom to read more, even though I have to have my wife to turn it on and off for me. I like the way you can make the words bigger so it is easier to read. I can read not just on the computer but I can read anywhere.
